App Store Optimisation: Getting Your App Found on Google Play

Most Indian apps are never found by search. These Google Play listing basics, store listing experiments and custom listings help the right users find and install your app.

App Store Optimisation: Getting Your App Found on Google Play

Publishing an app does not mean anyone will find it. On Google Play, people discover apps mostly by searching for a word or problem, browsing a category, or following a link you give them. App store optimisation, or ASO, is the work of making your listing easy to find and persuasive enough that people tap Install. It is the app equivalent of local SEO, and it costs far less than advertising. This post covers the basics for Indian apps, using Google's own Play Console help pages and reports on Google's I/O 2026 announcements.

The listing fields that matter, and their limits

Google's help page for setting up an app lists these limits: the app name can be up to 30 characters, the short description up to 80 characters, and the full description up to 4,000 characters. The short description is the first text users see on the detail page, so write it for a person, not a machine. Google also warns against repetitive or irrelevant keywords in the name and descriptions and says violations can lead to app suspension. Keyword stuffing is therefore not just ineffective; it is a risk.

A workable pattern is to put your brand and the main thing you do in the name, for example a clear function word after the brand. Use the full description to explain features in plain sentences that naturally include the words customers search for. Write the first few lines carefully, since they are what most visitors read.

Screenshots and icon

Screenshots and videos are often the deciding factor. Show the app solving a real problem on the first two screenshots, with a short caption in the customer's language. Google states that publishing grants it a licence to use your icon, screenshots and videos for promotion, so make sure you own everything you upload.

Localise for India properly

New apps default to English (United States). Google recommends custom translations and localised graphics, and says users see them when their language preference matches a language you have added. Without them, Google Play may show an automatic translation. For a business serving Tamil Nadu, adding a Tamil listing is a cheap way to stand out. Our post on multilingual websites in India applies the same thinking to websites. Reports on I/O 2026 add that Gemini inside Play Console can translate store listings from uploaded spreadsheets, which could lower the effort. Treat that as reported, and review any machine translation yourself.

Test instead of guessing: store listing experiments

Play Console lets you run A/B tests on your listing. According to Google's help page, a default graphics experiment tests the icon, feature graphic and screenshots in your default language, while localised experiments can also test descriptions in specific languages. An app can run one default graphics experiment or up to five localised ones at once, with up to two variants against the current listing. Experiments stop automatically after six months, and you choose a target metric such as install clicks. Google recommends testing one asset at a time so you know what caused a change. Advanced settings include the audience share, the smallest difference you want to detect and the confidence level.

A sensible first test for a small app is the first screenshot. Run it for as long as the creation page suggests before deciding.

Custom store listings for different audiences

Google's Play Console page says you can create up to 50 custom store listings. They can differ in name, icon, descriptions and graphics, and can be tailored by country, user state, search keyword or campaign. You send people to a listing through its unique URL, or choose it as the landing page in Google Ads. A school-management app could have one listing for principals and another for parents, and a campaign link in a printed brochure can land on the matching version.

Ratings and reviews

Ratings affect trust and conversion, and they are the part owners most often neglect. Ask for a review after a successful moment, such as a completed booking, not at first launch. Reply politely and specifically to criticism, fix recurring complaints, and never offer rewards for five-star reviews, which breaks store rules. Treat reviews as free user research; the bug a reviewer describes is usually real.

A 30-day ASO checklist

  1. Rewrite the name, short and full descriptions around what customers actually search for.
  2. Replace screenshots with benefit-led images and add captions in your top two languages.
  3. Add at least one local-language listing.
  4. Start one screenshot experiment and note the start date.
  5. Create custom listings for your two biggest audiences.
  6. Reply to every review from the last 60 days.

Google also announced new discovery features at I/O 2026, such as app discovery inside the Gemini app and an AI overlay called Ask Play. Reports say several are limited or not yet scheduled, so do not plan around them. Good listing basics will matter whichever way search evolves.

Frequently asked questions

What is app store optimisation?

App store optimisation, or ASO, means improving your Play Store listing so that more of the right people find it and install it. It covers the name, descriptions, icon, screenshots, language versions and ratings. It works like SEO for apps and usually costs far less than paid advertising.

How long can my Google Play app title and description be?

Google's Play Console help gives these limits: the app name can be up to 30 characters, the short description up to 80, and the full description up to 4,000. Avoid repeating keywords or adding irrelevant ones, because Google says such violations can result in app suspension.

How do store listing experiments work?

They are A/B tests inside Play Console. You create up to two variants of your icon, feature graphic, screenshots or, for localised tests, descriptions, and Google shows them to part of your visitors. An app can run one default graphics experiment or up to five localised ones, and each stops after six months.

Should I ask users for a five-star review?

Ask for a review, not a specific rating, and do it after a positive moment such as a completed order or booking. Never offer rewards or discounts in exchange for positive reviews, because that breaks store rules. Reply to criticism calmly and fix repeated complaints in the next update.
