Kotlin

Kotlin is the programming language Google prefers for building Android apps. It is concise, catches many common mistakes before the app ever runs, and works alongside older Java code.

What it means

Kotlin is a programming language created by JetBrains and made an official Android language by Google in 2017. Since 2019 Google has treated it as the preferred choice for new Android apps, and its newest Android tools, Jetpack Compose among them, are designed around it. Older apps were written in Java. Kotlin can sit beside that code, so an old app can be modernised one piece at a time.

Why it matters to the person paying for the app

You will probably never read the code, but three things about the language reach you. First, Kotlin forces the programmer to deal with missing values at the moment of writing, which removes a classic cause of sudden app crashes. Second, the code is shorter than the Java equivalent, so there is less to review, test and maintain. Third, it is the language any Android developer you hire later will expect to find.

That third point is the quiet one. If you own the source code but it is written in an obscure or outdated language, the ownership is worth little. Ask every quote which language the app will use.

An example from Madurai

A physiotherapy clinic owner in Madurai compares two quotes for a patient app that shows each patient's prescribed exercises and sends daily reminders. One quote is cheaper and built the older way, with Java and separate layout files. The other is in Kotlin with a modern interface toolkit. The cheaper app works on day one, but in two years the owner wants exercise videos and a progress chart, and may find fewer developers willing to extend the older approach. The Kotlin build costs a little more now and is easier to grow later.

How we use it

Our native Android apps are written in Kotlin, with the screens built in Jetpack Compose. Because the complete source code becomes yours on final payment, VS Tech Builders chooses the language with your future in mind: any competent Android developer should be able to pick the project up. The work sits under native Android app development, and our guide to app maintenance in India covers what you will pay after launch. The physiotherapy clinics page lists what else we build for clinic owners, and native app gives the wider picture.

Common questions

Is Kotlin better than Java for Android apps?

For new Android apps, yes in practice. Kotlin needs less code, handles missing values more safely and is the language Google's newest Android tools are built around. Java is not obsolete, and plenty of working apps still run on it, but there is little reason to start a new app in Java. The two can also live together inside one project.

Can Kotlin also be used for iPhone apps or websites?

Partly. Kotlin can be used for server code and, through Kotlin Multiplatform, to share some logic between Android and iPhone apps. Most business projects still build the iPhone screens separately. If you want one app for both phones with minimal duplication, frameworks such as Flutter or React Native are more common choices than Kotlin alone.
