PWA (Progressive Web App)

A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a website built so it can be installed on a phone's home screen, open full-screen like an app, load quickly on weak networks and, in many browsers, send notifications.

What it means

A PWA is a website with app-like manners. A visitor opens a link in the browser, the browser offers to add it to the home screen, and from then on it opens in its own window with an icon. Behind this sits a small script called a service worker that stores pages and data on the phone, so the app opens quickly even on a weak connection and can show saved content offline. There is no store listing and no download from Google Play, and one codebase serves Android, iPhone and laptop.

Why it matters for your business

People resist installing apps they will use rarely. A PWA removes that hurdle: the first visit is a link, the second can be an icon. Updates reach everyone the moment you publish, with no store review. The costs are limits. Access to phone hardware is narrower than in a native app, background tasks are restricted, and iPhones support fewer features than Android, though they have improved over recent versions. Anything that needs continuous GPS tracking, Bluetooth devices or heavy graphics belongs in a native app.

An example: a turf in Hyderabad

Imagine a box-cricket turf that takes bookings by phone call and Instagram messages, and suffers double bookings as a result. Players will not install an app to play once, so the turf needs something they can open from a link, pick a slot, pay by UPI and leave. Regulars are offered an add-to-home-screen prompt and get reminders; the staff open the same PWA to see the day's schedule.

How we use it

Our progressive web app development suits booking tools, staff dashboards and catalogues where reach matters more than hardware access. We build the offline layer on an offline-first basis and use push notifications where the platform supports them. If your app needs the phone's sensors or Bluetooth, VS Tech Builders will say so and point you to Android. Our comparison of PWAs and native Android apps weighs the two, and website or app: which first helps with sequencing.

Common questions

Is a PWA the same as an app from the Play Store?

No. A PWA is a website that the browser lets you install, so it has no store listing, no store review and no download from a store. A Play Store app is a separate program with deeper access to the phone. A PWA can sometimes be packaged for the Play Store as well, which suits businesses that want a store presence without a second codebase.

Do PWAs work on iPhones?

Yes, with limits. On an iPhone, Safari can save a PWA to the home screen, and it then opens without browser bars and can cache content for offline use. Some capabilities, including notifications, apply to installed PWAs on recent iOS versions, while several features remain more restricted than on Android. Test your key flows on an iPhone early, because behaviour differs between versions.
