Software Maintenance

Software maintenance is the ongoing work of fixing faults, applying security and platform updates, keeping integrations working and making small improvements after a system has gone live.

Software does not wear out like a machine, but it does go stale. The code stays the same while everything around it changes: phone operating systems, browsers, payment gateways, hosting servers and tax rules. Maintenance is the work that keeps the software in step with that moving world.

The four kinds of maintenance

  • Corrective: fixing faults that show up in real use.
  • Adaptive: changing the software when something around it changes, such as a new Android version or a gateway update.
  • Preventive: updating libraries and renewing certificates before they cause a failure.
  • Perfective: small improvements, like an extra report column, that make daily work easier.

A new module or a major feature is not maintenance. It is new development and should be quoted as such.

What happens when nobody looks after it

Unmaintained software works until the day it does not, usually at the busiest hour. Security patches are skipped, certificates lapse and nobody remembers how anything was set up, and the pile of small neglected jobs turns into technical debt. Budgeting for care from the start is cheaper than an emergency rebuild later. Our guides to website maintenance cost and app maintenance in India give realistic figures.

An example: a lab report portal in Erode

Imagine a diagnostic lab whose patients download reports from a web portal. Nothing in the code changed for a year, then the hosting company retired an old server version and the portal showed a blank page on Monday morning. Nobody had a maintenance arrangement, nobody could find the developer and patients queued at the counter for printouts.

What we include

Every project we deliver has a 14-day post-launch correction window. Beyond that, the Standard plan adds one month of launch support and the Premium plan three months of priority support. Website plans renew each year for hosting, SSL and maintenance at ₹2,999, ₹3,999 or ₹5,999 depending on the plan, and larger systems can take an optional maintenance retainer from VS Tech Builders. Read what an SLA should say before you agree response times with any vendor, us included.

Common questions

Do I need a maintenance contract if the software is working fine?

Working today does not mean working next year. Browsers, phones and payment gateways keep changing, and certificates expire on a calendar. A small brochure website may need only its yearly renewal. A system that takes payments or holds customer records deserves someone responsible for updates, backups and fixes, either under a retainer or on a pay-per-request basis with a clear response time.

What is the difference between maintenance and support?

Support helps your staff use the software, for example by resetting a password or explaining a report. Maintenance changes the software itself: fixing faults, applying updates and adapting to outside changes. Many agreements bundle both, so check which one covers which task, and how quickly each is promised to be handled.
