Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge page experience: how quickly the main content loads, how fast the page responds to taps, and how stable the layout stays while loading.

What it means

Google picked three measurements to describe how a page feels to a real visitor. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is how long the main image or text block takes to appear; Google calls 2.5 seconds or less good. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) is how quickly the page reacts after a tap or click, and 200 milliseconds or less is the good mark. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is how much the page jumps around while loading, and 0.1 or less is good. The figures come from real visitors' devices, judged at the 75th percentile, not only from tests on a fast laptop.

Why it matters for your business

These metrics are one of many signals in Google's ranking, and relevant content still counts for far more. Their larger effect is on people: a slow page loses visitors before they read a word, and a shifting button makes them tap the wrong thing. Our post on how a slow website quietly kills sales goes into that cost. You can read your own scores for free in PageSpeed Insights and in Google Search Console. A phone-friendly layout, covered under responsive design, is the base for all three.

An example: a Jaipur handicraft store

Take an online store selling handicrafts and jewellery that uploads photos straight from a camera, so its home page banner weighs several megabytes and the main image appears late on a mobile connection: a poor LCP. A promotional strip loads after the page and pushes the Buy button down by a few lines, so shoppers tap the wrong item: a poor CLS. Resizing and compressing the banner, reserving space for the strip and delaying non-essential scripts fixes both.

How we use it

VS Tech Builders builds on Next.js, which splits code page by page and can serve pre-built pages from a CDN, so the starting point is quick. That gives a head start, but a heavy third-party script or an oversized photo can still undo it, so each page needs checking. If your current site scores badly, a rebuild of your corporate website is sometimes the answer, though often the fixes are small, such as images and scripts. These metrics sit within the wider topic of SEO.

Common questions

What is a good Core Web Vitals score?

There is no single score. Each metric has its own threshold: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less. A page passes when most of its real visits, measured at the 75th percentile, meet all three. Tools such as PageSpeed Insights show which metric needs work.

Do Core Web Vitals directly decide my Google ranking?

They are one signal among many, and Google has said that relevant, helpful content matters more. A fast page will not rank for something it does not cover well. They still deserve attention because slow or jumpy pages lose visitors and enquiries regardless of where they rank. Treat them as a quality floor, not as a shortcut to the first page.
