Next.js

Next.js is a framework, built on React, for making fast websites and web applications. It can prepare pages in advance so they load quickly and are easy for Google to read.

What it means

Next.js is a toolkit for building websites and web applications, created and maintained by Vercel on top of React. React alone draws the moving parts of a page inside the visitor's browser. Next.js adds the rest of what a business site needs: page addresses, preparing pages on the server, image handling and ways to load data.

Why it matters for your business

The key idea is that pages can be prepared before a visitor arrives. A page prepared in advance reaches the phone as ready-made HTML, so it appears quickly on a mid-range handset over patchy 4G, and Google can read it without running scripts. That feeds straight into Core Web Vitals and search visibility. Pages that must be personal, such as a customer's order history, can still be prepared on request.

The same site can also be exported as plain files and hosted cheaply, which keeps yearly running costs low and gives attackers little to aim at. The trade-off is editing. Unlike WordPress there is no built-in admin screen, so a site you update every week needs a content system attached. A small brochure site you rarely touch, or one run by a marketer who wants to edit everything personally, may be happier on WordPress or a site builder.

An example from Kumbakonam

A furniture showroom in Kumbakonam lists over four hundred products, each with photographs, dimensions and price, and most visitors arrive from Google on mid-range phones. A Next.js site prepares every product page in advance, so a search for "teak dining table" lands on a fast, readable page with the price in plain view. A new product is a new entry in the content system, and its page and search listing appear on the next build.

How we use it

Next.js is the core of web work at VS Tech Builders, used for corporate websites and online stores and written in TypeScript. This website is itself a Next.js export. For an honest side-by-side with WordPress, read Next.js vs WordPress for business websites. The furniture stores page covers the rest of a showroom's needs, and the pricing page lists the published website plans.

Common questions

Is Next.js better than WordPress for a business website?

It depends on who will edit the site and how much speed and control matter. Next.js usually gives faster pages, tighter security and more design freedom, but changes go through a developer or a connected content system. WordPress gives you a ready-made editing screen and a huge library of plug-ins. A site you edit daily may suit WordPress; a site built for speed and growth may suit Next.js.

Will I be locked in to my developer if the site is built on Next.js?

Not if you own the source code. Next.js is open source and widely used, so any capable React developer can take over a well-built project. Lock-in comes from vendors who keep the code, the hosting account or the domain in their own name. Ask for all three to be in yours, with the code handed over in full.
