VPS (Virtual Private Server)

A virtual private server, or VPS, is a reserved portion of a physical server that behaves like your own machine, with guaranteed memory and processing power and full control over what runs on it. You are also responsible for keeping it updated and secure.

What it means

A physical server in a data centre is divided into several virtual servers. Each one gets its own memory, storage and processor share, its own operating system and its own administrator login. Unlike shared hosting, what a neighbour does cannot starve you of resources, and unlike a whole dedicated machine, the price stays modest.

What you gain and what you take on

A VPS lets you install exactly the software your application needs, such as a Node.js app with a PostgreSQL database and a background job that sends reminders. That freedom has a counterpart. Someone must apply security updates, configure the firewall, watch disk space and take backups. An unmanaged VPS that nobody maintains is one of the commonest ways small businesses get hacked. A managed plan shifts part of that work to the provider, at a higher price.

Why it matters for your business

A VPS sits between cheap shared hosting, which is limiting, and full cloud hosting, which is flexible but harder to budget. It suits custom software that has outgrown shared hosting but does not yet need to spread across many machines.

An example

A wholesale distributor in Dindigul gives a few dozen retailers a web ordering portal. The software needs a database, a scheduled job for overnight stock sync and a private admin area. Shared hosting cannot run the scheduled job reliably, so the owner moves the portal to a VPS in a Mumbai data centre. His part-time IT person gets a short checklist: update the server monthly, test the backup restore, and check the disk every week.

When a VPS is the wrong choice

If nobody on your side, or on your developer's side, will look after the server, choose a managed platform instead. A VPS is also unnecessary for a simple brochure site. Hosting is one of the choices VS Tech Builders discusses while planning a project: for custom web portals we compare a VPS with managed cloud hosting before settling on a provider. The yearly costs are set out in our website maintenance cost guide.

Common questions

Is a VPS faster than shared hosting?

Often, yes, because your share of memory and processing power is reserved rather than competing with other websites. Speed also depends on the code, the database and how images are served, so a poorly built site stays slow on any server. For a busy custom application, moving from shared hosting to a VPS commonly removes slowdowns that appear at peak hours.

Can I manage a VPS myself without technical knowledge?

It is not advisable. You will need to apply security updates, configure a firewall, monitor disk space and test backups, and mistakes can leave your data exposed. If you lack technical staff, choose a managed VPS, or ask your developer to maintain it under a retainer. Treat the server like a vehicle that needs regular servicing, not a purchase you can forget.
